Following his departure from Palm, Lai has focused on private investment, but remains heavily connected to the company and serves as a director of a number of its subsidiaries. Lai is largely a private person; however, according to a report by the Birmingham Post, a loose estimate of his total wealth is £2.8 billion. He resides in Guangzhou, a city in the Guangdong province of China, and only attends West Bromwich Albion club matches occasionally. He had left the day-to-day running of the club in the hands of long-term associates Li Piyue, who served as the club's chairman, and Ke Xu, who was Chief Executive Officer. However, in February 2022 he named himself club chairman & then began to fleece the club of millions starting with a £5m loan from the club, why take a loan if you’re worth £2.8b, we’re heading for the 1st division & he doesn’t care or is not bothered, we’re whined because of this man & his lack of investment.
