Hepp studierte Mathematik und Physik an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität in Münster und an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule (ETH) in Zürich, wo er 1962 bei Res Jost promovierte (Kovariante analytische Funktionen) und sich 1963 habilitierte. 1966 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2002 war er dort Professor für Theoretische Physik. 1964 bis 1966 war er in Princeton am Institute for Advanced Study. Hepp war außerdem Loeb Lecturer in Harvard und am IHES bei Paris.

From 1966 until his retirement in 2002 he was professor of theoretical physics there. From 1964 to 1966 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Hepp was also Loeb Lecturer at Harvard and was at the IHÉS near Paris.

In der Quantenfeldtheorie gab er einen vollständigen Beweis des Bogoljubow-Parasiuk Renormalisierungsverfahrens (Hepp und Wolfhart Zimmermann zu Ehren auch BPHZ-Verfahren genannt). Seit einem Forschungsaufenthalt 1975/6 am MIT arbeitete er auch über Neurowissenschaften (zum Beispiel Wechselwirkung zwischen Bewegungssensoren, Sehsinn und Augenbewegungen mit V. Henn in Zürich). 2004 erhielt er die Max-Planck-Medaille.

In quantum field theory he gave a complete proof of the Bogoliubov–Parasyuk renormalization theorem (Hepp and Wolfhart Zimmermann, called in their honor the BPHZ theorem). Since a research stay 1975/6 at MIT he also worked in neuroscience (for example, reciprocal effect between movement sensors, visual sense and eye movements with V. Henn in Zurich). In 2004 he received the Max Planck Medal.
