After the war Brewer served as secretary and administrative assistant to United States Senators Josiah Bailey and William B. Umstead, respectively. He gained significant wealth by purchasing land that was used later for roads. In 1963, Brewer was sentenced to 18 months in state prison for bid rigging. He ran for Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in 1956 and for Governor in 1964, losing in the Democratic Party primary each time.
