Japanese hip hop is hip hop music from Japan. It is said to have begun when Hiroshi Fujiwara returned to Japan and started playing hip hop records in the early 1980s. Japanese hip hop tends to be most directly influenced by old school hip hop, taking from the era's catchy beats, dance culture and overall fun and carefree nature and incorporating it into their music. As a result, hip hop stands as one of the most commercially viable mainstream music genres in Japan and the line between it and pop music is frequently blurred.

Seguendo le orme del film, musicisti di strada iniziarono a ballare breakdance presso lo Yoyogi Park. emerse rapidamente come b.boy, e successivamente fondò la , mentre DJ Krush diventò un rinomato DJ dopo la crescita artistica del periodo dello Yoyogi Park. Diversi DJ seguirono queste strade a partire dal 1985. Un anno dopo a Shibuya aprì un club completamente dedicato all'hip hop. All'epoca vi erano alcune esitazioni ad utilizzare la lingua giapponese per il rap: l'accento e le notevoli variazioni verbali potevano rendere la lingua inadatta allo scopo. Alcuni rapper emersero comunque come , , e . Negli anni 1990, apparve un orientato ad un pubblico adolescente, e l'hip hop entrò a far parte del mainstream musicale giapponese.
