Potenzielle Teilnehmer für die erste Auflage 1969 waren aus Europa Real Madrid (Sieger 1960) und Inter Mailand (1964, 1965). Aus Südamerika waren teilnahmeberechtigt Peñarol Montevideo (Sieger 1961, 1966), FC Santos (1962, 1963) und Racing Club (Avellaneda) (1967). Die Finalteilnehmer sollten in jeweiligen kontinentalen Qualifikationsrunden ermittelt werden. Da Real Madrid seine Teilnahme zurückzog, stand Inter Mailand als europäischer Finalteilnehmer kampflos fest. In Südamerika diente die Supercopa de Campeones Intercontinentales als Qualifikationsturnier. Hier setzte sich in einer Ligarunde mit Hin- und Rückspiel der FC Santos durch und qualifizierte sich so für das Finale gegen Inter Mailand. Für die zweite Ausflage 1970 sagte neben Real Madrid, das erneut verzichtete, auch Inter Mailand seine Teilnahme ab, so dass kein europäischer Vertreter antrat. Das südamerikanische Qualifikationsturnier, dessen Teilnehmerfeld sich um Estudiantes de La Plata (Sieger des Weltpokals 1968) erweitert hatte, gewann Club Atlético Peñarol. Letztlich wurde bereits bei der zweiten Auflage kein Titel mehr ausgespielt. Al jugarse la primera edición solo había dos participantes del Viejo Continente: Inter y Real Madrid. Como el Real Madrid no estaba dispuesto a jugar la final por la Zona Europea, el Inter se clasificó automáticamente para jugar la final. En la segunda edición también se realizaron las eliminatorias en la Zona Sudamericana, pero tampoco se realizaron las de la Zona Europea, de modo que se reconoce esta edición como inconclusa. En la Zona del Nuevo Continente participaron en la primera edición de 1968 Peñarol, Racing Club y Santos, campeones intercontinentales de Sudamérica hasta 1967 inclusive, y en la segunda de 1969 la disputaron los mismos equipos más el campeón de la Copa Intercontinental de 1968: Estudiantes de La Plata. Fue el segundo torneo organizado en conjunto por la CONMEBOL y la UEFA, después de la Copa Intercontinental. Este título fue olvidado durante mucho tiempo. En 2005 la CONMEBOL reconoció los títulos obtenidos por los campeones y lo tomó en cuenta para su ranking de clubes.

W pierwszej edycji została przeprowadzona seria spotkań między zdobywcami Pucharu Interkontynentalnego w różnych latach z Ameryki Południowej i planowany mecz w europejskiej strefie pomiędzy Interem Mediolan i Realem Madryt. Ponieważ hiszpański klub odmówił udziału w turnieju Inter automatycznie zakwalifikował się do finału Superpucharu. W drugiej edycji mecze odbywały się tylko w Ameryce Południowej i po tym turniej przestał istnieć. W 1968 roku w strefie Ameryki Południowej o wyjście do finału walczyły trzy kluby - CA Peñarol, Racing Club de Avellaneda oraz Santos FC, w drugiej edycji dołączył do nich zdobywca Pucharu Interkontynentalnego w 1968 roku - Estudiantes de La Plata.
