But as I thought of it as fiction the thing got bigger and bigger. It couldn't be that. I've been living with this thing for some time now. I don't know how much I have got over, but I have used a small strike in an orchard valley as the symbol of man's eternal, bitter warfare with himself.

Lembra-se que eu tinha a ideia que ia escrever a autobiografia de um comunista. ... Aí está o problema. Eu tinha planeado escrever um relato jornalístico de uma greve. Mas como pensei nisso como ficção, a coisa ficou cada vez maior. Não podia ser assim. Agora tenho vivido com esta coisa há algum tempo. Não sei quanto me falta, mas estou a usar uma pequena greve num vale de pomares como símbolo da eterna e amarga guerra do homem com ele mesmo.
