Das Gedicht sammelt die Eindrücke der ersten Reise in den Harz, die Goethe vom 29. November bis zum 14. Dezember 1777 unternahm.Es steht am Ende einer Reihe großer, mit Wandrers Sturmlied beginnender freirhythmischer Hymnen des jungen Dichters und zeigt bereits eine gewisse Distanz zum schöpferischen Geniegedanken und Ich-Bezug der vorhergehenden Werke.Es ist von einem religiösen Klang durchzogen und lässt neben Bezügen zur römischen Mythologie einen biblischen Hintergrund erkennen, der jedoch pantheistisch umbesetzt ist.
