Die Große Harzburg ist die Ruine einer ehemaligen Kaiserburg am Harznordrand direkt oberhalb von Bad Harzburg im Landkreis Goslar, Niedersachsen (Deutschland). In unmittelbarer Nähe zur Großen Harzburg liegt die Kleine Harzburg. Das Verhältnis der beiden Anlagen zueinander ist noch nicht geklärt. Der wüste Ort „Schulenrode“ (im heute sogenannten „Krodotal“) hat in mehreren Funktionen für die Burganlage(n) gedient, so als Versorgungshof und eventuell als zweiter Standort für das im Jahr 1074 auf der Großen Harzburg zerstörte Chorherren-Stift.

The Harzburg, also called Große Harzburg ("Great Harz Castle"), is a former imperial castle, situated on the northwestern edge of the Harz mountain range overlooking the spa resort of Bad Harzburg in Goslar District in the state of Lower Saxony, Germany. It was erected from 1065 to 1068 at the behest of King Henry IV of Germany, slighted during the Saxon Rebellion in 1073-75, and a century later rebuilt under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and his Welf successor Otto IV, who died here in 1218.

In unmittelbarer Nähe zur Großen Harzburg liegt die Kleine Harzburg. Das Verhältnis der beiden Anlagen zueinander ist noch nicht geklärt. Das Alter und die Funktion einer 60 × 95 m großen Wallgrabenanlage auf dem der Großen Harzburg benachbarten „Sachsenberg“ (im Volksmund „Sachsenburg“ genannt) sind ebenfalls noch nicht geklärt. Es konkurrieren die Deutungen einer 1073 errichteten Belagerungsanlage und einer unvollendeten vorgelagerten Bastion der Harzburg. Die Befestigung ist heute kaum mehr erkennbar. Der wüste Ort „Schulenrode“ (im heute sogenannten „Krodotal“) hat in mehreren Funktionen für die Burganlage(n) gedient, so als Versorgungshof und eventuell als zweiter Standort für das im Jahr 1074 auf der Großen Harzburg zerstörte Chorherren-Stift. Die Höhenburg ist weitgehend verschwunden; lediglich Fragmente der Grundmauern und der Türme sowie der Brunnen sind erhalten.
