Okręt został zwodowany 6 grudnia 1942 roku w stoczni w , a do służby w Royal Canadian Navy wszedł 17 czerwca 1943 roku z numerem burtowym K330. Podczas działań wojennych HMCS „Waskesiu” uczestniczył w eskorcie 20 konwojów, a w lutym 1944 roku wspólnie z bliźniaczą brytyjską fregatą zatopił niemieckiego U-Boota . Jednostka została wycofana ze służby 29 listopada 1946 roku i w roku następnym sprzedana Indiom, gdzie służyła od 1950 roku jako pilotówka pod nazwą „Hooghly”.

It was the first frigate constructed and commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy. Following the war, the vessel was sold to India where it was renamed Hooghly. Named for the town of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, there was already a warship named "Prince Albert". The Royal Canadian Navy then named the ship after the town closest to Prince Albert National Park.

The frigate was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy on 16 June 1943 at Victoria, British Columbia with the pennant number K 330.
