Un officier G2 (G pour General Staff et indice 2 pour type 'military intelligence' dans le code OTAN) est un officier responsable du renseignement dans un état-major. Le bureau renseignements au sein de quartiers généraux OTAN est le G2 qui est à même de mener les quatre opérations du cycle renseignement (direction, recueil, traitement et diffusion), la planification et la direction de la sécurité militaire ainsi que d’autres activités entreprises en temps de paix telles qu'études, entraînement et exercices. Dans l'armée française, cette mission était remplie par le Deuxième Bureau jusqu'à la seconde guerre mondiale.

LTG Potter is "the senior advisor to the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff of the Army for all aspects of Intelligence, Counterintelligence and Security, and responsible for the training, equipping, policy and oversight of the Army Intelligence and Security Enterprise".
