名探偵（めいたんてい）は、ミステリーなどに登場する、手に入れた情報や証拠をもとに推理を行い真実を探り出し、事件を解決へと導く存在のことである。名「探偵」とはなっているが、探偵を職業としない者も多い（作品外では探偵役とも呼ばれる）。 名探偵の歴史はエドガー・アラン・ポーが生み出したC・オーギュスト・デュパンより始まるとされている。デュパンが初登場した短編小説『モルグ街の殺人』は世界初の推理小説とも言われている。 そしてその40数年後にはアーサー・コナン・ドイルがシャーロック・ホームズを生み出す。ホームズの存在は名探偵という存在を一般化し、その後ミステリ界には数多くの名探偵が生まれることとなる。
