The first Erie County Fair was held in 1820, and was hosted by the Niagara County Agricultural Society. The fair is the fourth largest county fair in the United States, with the 2019 fair setting an attendance record of 1,238,456. The Erie County fair's midway has been operated by Strates Shows for the last 98 years. The exclusive relationship between the Erie County Fair and the Strates Shows, is considered a historical milestone in the modern amusement industry. In 2019, Strates Shows featured the classic double Ferris wheel called the “Sky Wheel” for its 95th anniversary with the Erie County Fair. This was the first time the show featured the Sky Wheel at the Erie County Fair in over 20 years. In 2020, the 181st Erie County Fair was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 181st fair which was originally planned to be held from August 12-23, 2020 will be held the following year from August 11-22, 2021. The postponement of the 2020 Erie County Fair marks only the second time since 1841 that the Fair has been cancelled. During World War II, the 1943 Fair was cancelled to support the patriotic rationing of gasoline and other vital wartime commodities. The fair returned the following year to record breaking attendance.
