Ficou situado na Grã-Bretanha, onde trabalhou como mecânico e pintor. Também desenhava uma pequena tira semanal. Encontrou sua esposa, Josie Dumont, uma francesa, na Bélgica logo após a Batalha de Bulge. Josie foi a inspiração para a líder das gatinhas.
