Clifton Bledsoe Cates (August 31, 1893 – June 4, 1970) was a United States Marine Corps four-star general who served as the 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1948 to 1951. He was honored for his heroism during World War I at the Battle of Belleau Wood, and for his inspired combat leadership at the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. He is considered one of the most distinguished young officers of World War I. Clifton Bledsoe Cates (Tiptonville, 31 agosto 1893 – Annapolis, 4 giugno 1970) è stato un generale statunitense, attivo nel corpo dei Marine durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Arruolatosi nel 1917, prese parte alle ultime battaglie della prima guerra mondiale in Francia, venendo ferito e ricevendo alcune decorazioni. Dopo alcuni incarichi a terra prestò servizio sulla nave da battaglia California e con il 4º Reggimento Marine a Shanghai; spese quindi la maggior parte degli anni trenta in ruoli di comando all'interno del corpo, salvo un periodo compreso tra il 1937 e il 1938 che lo vide nuovamente in Cina. rdf:langString
