The Bellerophon Painter was one of the first Attic black-figure vase painters. His period of activity is dated between 630 and 600 BC. He was a contemporary of the Nessos Painter, whose importance and artistic class he did not reach. His known works are two neck amphora, one depicting Bellerophon, the other a chimera. Both were found at Vari and are now in the National Archaeological Museum at Athens (Inv. 16389 and 16391). A striking feature of his and his contemporaries’ works is the habit of filling the painted areas with many figures and ornaments that only be distinguished with difficulty.

Der Bellerophon-Maler war einer der ersten attischen schwarzfigurigen Vasenmaler. Seine Schaffensperiode wird in die Zeit zwischen 630 und 600 v. Chr. datiert. Der Bellerophon-Maler war ein Zeitgenosse des Nessos-Malers, an dessen Bedeutung und künstlerische Klasse er jedoch nicht herankam. Von ihm sind zwei Halsamphoren mit Darstellung des Bellerophon und der Chimaira bekannt, beide wurden in gefunden und befinden sich heute in Athen, Nationalmuseum Inv. 16389 und 16391. Auffällig ist bei ihm und einigen anderen attischen Vasenmalern dieser Zeit, dass die Bildflächen der großformatigen Vasen mit vielen Figuren und Ornamenten gefüllt werden, die zum Teil nur noch schwer voneinander zu unterscheiden sind.
