Das Amerikanistische Phonetische Alphabet (APA, englisch Americanist Phonetic Alphabet, auch North American Phonetic Alphabet oder Americanist phonetic notation) ist eine Erweiterung des lateinischen Alphabets zur phonetischen Transkription gesprochener Sprachen, das auf John Wesley Powell zurückgeht. Im Gegensatz zum Internationalen Phonetischen Alphabet (IPA) macht es stärkeren Gebrauch von diakritischen Zeichen. Despite its name, the term "Americanist phonetic alphabet" has always been widely used outside the Americas. For example, a version of it is the standard for the transcription of Arabic in articles published in the Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft, the journal of the German Oriental Society. Diacritics are widely used in Americanist notation. Unlike the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which seeks to use as few diacritics as possible for phonemic distinctions, restricting diacritics to phonetic detail, the Americanist notation relies on diacritics for basic consonants and vowels.
