Established in 2001, it is a third level tour, the highest level of men's golf in Europe being the European Tour, and the second level being the Challenge Tour. Like the other third-tier European tours, the top ten players on the Order of Merit are exempt through the second stage of European Tour Qualifying School, and the top five win playing privileges on the Challenge Tour. Alumni who have gone on to win on the European Tour include Marco Crespi, Guido Migliozzi, Chris Paisley, Julien Quesne, and Matt Wallace.

Die ersten 5 der Tourwertung bekommen eine eingeschränkte Spielberechtigung für die Challenge Tour und auch Startplätze für die zweite Stufe (Stage 2) der 3-stufigen Qualifying School, wobei auch ein gewisses Kontingent für einige weitere, unmittelbar dahinter klassierte Spieler für die Stage 2 bereitgehalten wird. In 2010 werden twintig toernooien in zeven verschillende landen gespeeld. De Alps Tour heeft ongeveer 600 leden die uit 22 verschillende landen komen. Per toernooi kunnen 132 spelers meedoen. De toernooien duren drie of vier dagen. Na twee dagen is er een cut waarna de beste veertig spelers en ties verder mogen.
