Notable spaceflight activities in 2017 included the maiden flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (also called LVM3) on 5 June and the first suborbital test of Rocket Lab's Electron rocket, inaugurating the Mahia spaceport in New Zealand. The rocket is named for its innovative Rutherford engine which feeds propellants via battery-powered electric motors instead of the usual gas generator and turbopumps.

El japonès, un coet sonda suborbital modificat per al vol orbital, va fracassar en arribar a l'òrbita al gener. Si hagués tingut èxit, hagués sigut el vehicle més petit i lleuger en situar un objecte a l'òrbita. El famós coet rus Soiuz-U va ser retirat en la seva missió núm. 786 el 22 de febrer. El 30 de març, la missió va ser llançada amb un primer tram de Falcon 9 ja utilitzat anteriorment, assolint una fita important en el ; posteriorment es van reutilitzar més primers trams del mateix coet.
