The 2016 United States presidential election in Louisiana was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, as part of the 2016 United States presidential election in which all 50 states plus the District of Columbia participated. Louisiana voters chose electors to represent them in the Electoral College via a popular vote, pitting the Republican Party's nominee, businessman Donald Trump, and running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence against Democratic Party nominee, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and her running mate Virginia Senator Tim Kaine. Louisiana has eight electoral votes in the Electoral College. Trump won the state with 58.09% of the vote, while Clinton received 38.45%. Trump performed slightly better in the state than Mitt Romney in 2012, but also slightly worse than John McCain in 2008. In contrast, Clinton's vote share in the state was a decrease from Barack Obama's vote shares in 2012 and 2008, where he earned 40.58% and 39.93%, respectively. This makes it the largest loss by a Democrat since Democratic nominee Walter Mondale in 1984. Louisiana is also one of 11 states whose electoral votes went to Bill Clinton twice, but which Hillary Clinton did not win. Six of those states, including Louisiana, have not supported any Democratic Presidential candidate since Bill Clinton (The other five being Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri), while an additional five (Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania) had all voted Democratic at least twice since Bill Clinton's re-election in 1996.
