Les sénateurs sont élus au suffrage indirect par des grands électeurs, dont une large majorité sont des délégués des communes. Ainsi, à la suite de la victoire de la droite lors des élections municipales de mars 2014, les élections sénatoriales permettent à la droite de redevenir majoritaire au Sénat, trois ans après avoir laissé la majorité à la gauche.
