The 1996 African Women's Handball Championship was the twelfth edition of the African Women's Handball Championship, held in Benin from 16 to 29 October 1996. It acted as the African qualifying tournament for the 1997 World Women's Handball Championship.

La 12e édition du Championnat d'Afrique des nations féminin de handball a eu lieu à Cotonou (Bénin) du 18 au 27 octobre 1996. Le tournoi réunit les meilleures équipes féminines de handball en Afrique et a lieu en même temps que le tournoi masculin. Ce championnat sert de qualification pour les championnats du monde 1997. En finale, la Côte d'Ivoire s'impose nettement 35 à 19 face à l'Algérie et remporte son 2e titre dans la compétition. L'Angola complète le podium. À noter que le Bénin, pays organisateur, n'a pas présenté d'équipe.

Odbył się w dniach 16–29 października 1996 roku. Tytułu zdobytego w 1994 roku broniła reprezentacja Angoli. Drugi tytuł w historii wywalczyła reprezentacja Wybrzeża Kości Słoniowej i wraz z pozostałymi medalistami zakwalifikowała się na MŚ 1997.
