The 1973 Durban strikes were seen as a form of "mass civil disobedience" as it was illegal for black Africans, under the Native Labour (Settlement of Disputes) Act, 1953 to strike in South Africa during this time. The 1973 Durban strikes were significant as they contributed to the formation of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in 1985 and the growth of South Africa's anti-apartheid trade union movement.
