The classification of mires is confusing not only because of major regional differences but also different criteria have been used which vary in space and time and therefore represent continua of change rather than discrete differences. Note: Mire waters are located mostly below the soil surface level as are most of its plants. Also, bogs receive water mainly from precipitation, while fens are supplied with water mostly from surface and groundwater sources. Marshes and swamps are non-peat forming. Marsh vegetation is dominated by grasses, swamp vegetation by trees.
